Matchweek 3 of the Greece Super League 1 saw AEK Athens deliver a devastating 5-0 statement, while our forecasting model endured a challenging weekend picking outright winners.
How our forecasts did
Seven fixtures carried forecasts this round, and the model struggled with outrights, landing just three of the seven match result calls. The exact scoreline predictions fared even worse, with zero of the seven returning correctly. The win or draw and both teams to score categories both saw five correct calls, while four first team to score projections and two half-time and full-time forecasts landed.
Results
Volos NFC 1-1 Olympiakos Piraeus Volos earned a vital draw against a previously unbeaten Olympiakos. Our model firmly backed an Olympiakos Piraeus win and expected another defensive shutout, but correctly called the visitors to strike first and the match to feature fewer than 2.5 goals.
AEK Athens FC 5-0 Aris Thessalonikis AEK Athens ruthlessly dismantled Aris Thessalonikis to continue their imperious home form at the Olympic Stadium. The model accurately backed an AEK win and for them to lead at the break, though the five-goal margin comfortably exceeded expectations.
Atromitos 1-1 Kalamata Kalamata picked up a point on the road against Atromitos. We projected an Atromitos win and more than 2.5 goals, both of which missed, though the calls for Atromitos to strike first and both teams to score proved accurate.
OFI 2-0 Kifisia OFI secured a solid home victory, overcoming a stubborn Kifisia side. Our model made a cautious but correct call for an OFI win, alongside accurate projections for fewer than 2.5 goals and the hosts to open the scoring.
Levadiakos 0-2 Panetolikos Panetolikos compounded Levadiakos' miserable start to the season with a two-goal away victory. We backed a Levadiakos win based on their recent home record, making this a clear miss across the board save for the total goals and both teams to score forecasts.
Panathinaikos 3-1 PAOK Panathinaikos emerged victorious over a previously high-scoring PAOK. The model successfully forecasted a Panathinaikos win and more than 2.5 goals, though it incorrectly projected the visitors to break the deadlock.
Asteras Tripolis 0-2 Iraklis 1908 Iraklis 1908 shrugged off their early-season defensive frailties to secure an away win. Our projection for an Asteras Tripolis win fell flat, although the anticipation of fewer than 2.5 goals and at least one side being kept off the scoresheet landed safely.
What we got wrong
Our forecasting model struggled to anticipate the resilience of away sides and the ongoing struggles of previously strong home teams. The most glaring misreads came in backing Levadiakos and Asteras Tripolis. Levadiakos had shown healthy home form in recent months, averaging two goals a game, which convinced the model to back them despite back-to-back heavy defeats to start the campaign. Instead, they blanked again. Similarly, Asteras Tripolis were expected to rely on their mid-table resilience from last season to overcome an Iraklis side that had conceded five goals in two matches, yet the visitors easily kept a clean sheet and took the points.
The model also stumbled slightly with Olympiakos. While it rightly noted the defensive solidity that underpinned their recent title win and two initial 1-0 victories, it underestimated Volos. Despite Volos searching for their first league win and having never beaten the Piraeus side in ten attempts, they dug in to secure a 1-1 draw, ruining a firm match result forecast.
Matchweek 3 proved that early-season form is still settling in the Super League 1. While AEK Athens look devastatingly sharp at home, the stumbles of Olympiakos and the continued struggles of teams at the bottom suggest a fiercely competitive autumn lies ahead.
