Matchweek 7 in the Eredivisie produced several unexpected twists at the top of the table, headlined by Twente inflicting a 3-2 defeat on PSV Eindhoven to halt the leaders' perfect away run, while Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by Excelsior. Across nine fixtures, our forecasting model had mixed fortunes, landing four of nine match result calls but proving far sharper when identifying the first team to score.
How our forecasts did
The model suffered its heaviest defeat in the exact scoreline projections, where zero of the nine calls landed, while the half-time and full-time topic also struggled, with only three of nine calls proving correct. The match result forecasts also ran into trouble, landing four of nine as home stumbles by Sparta Rotterdam and Ajax, paired with PSV's defeat, upset the expected outcomes. Total goals finished slightly ahead of even, with five of nine calls landing, while both teams to score yielded four correct calls from nine.
The brightest spot was the first team to score topic, where eight of the nine calls landed correctly. The broader win or draw forecasts also performed reliably, with seven of nine landing across the round.
Results
Groningen 3-0 PEC Zwolle Groningen took command from the outset to beat PEC Zwolle 3-0, landing our calls for a home win, win or draw, more than 2.5 goals, and Groningen leading at both half-time and full-time. The only miss was both teams to score, as Zwolle failed to register despite our expectation of an open contest.
ADO Den Haag 1-1 Cambuur Winless ADO Den Haag dug in to secure a 1-1 draw against Cambuur. The outcome missed our call for a Cambuur victory, but Cambuur to win or draw and Cambuur to score the opening goal both landed.
Sparta Rotterdam 0-4 Heerenveen Sparta Rotterdam suffered a comprehensive 0-4 defeat at home to Heerenveen. Our call for a Sparta win missed completely, though Heerenveen opening the scoring and the match producing more than 2.5 goals both landed.
Ajax 2-2 Excelsior Ajax were held to a 2-2 draw by an effective Excelsior side, missing our call for an Ajax victory. The high-confidence call for more than 2.5 goals landed, alongside both teams to score and Ajax scoring first.
Willem II 0-1 Fortuna Sittard Fortuna Sittard maintained their solid away form with a 0-1 win over Willem II, landing our match result call, the win or draw forecast, and Fortuna scoring first. The match fell short of our high-confidence projection of more than 2.5 goals.
Feyenoord 5-0 Utrecht Feyenoord delivered the most emphatic display of the weekend, sweeping Utrecht aside 5-0. Our firm call for a Feyenoord win landed without difficulty, as did calls for more than 2.5 goals, Feyenoord scoring first, and Feyenoord leading at both the break and full-time.
AZ Alkmaar 1-0 Telstar AZ Alkmaar recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Telstar to keep their winning streak going. The high-confidence call for an AZ win landed alongside AZ scoring first, though Telstar's defensive resolve kept the score well under the projected 2.5-goal total.
Twente 3-2 PSV Eindhoven Twente edged PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in an entertaining encounter at De Grolsch Veste. Our call for an away win missed as PSV failed to score first, but our high-confidence projections for both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals landed.
NEC Nijmegen 1-1 GO Ahead Eagles NEC Nijmegen were held to a 1-1 draw by GO Ahead Eagles, denying our projection of a home win. The forecast for NEC to score first landed, as did the call for both teams to score.
Where the model missed
The biggest miss of the weekend came in Enschede, where our model backed PSV Eindhoven to take all three points. PSV entered the fixture with 22 goals across six matches and a perfect away record, but the model underestimated Twente's defensive baseline on their own ground, where they had allowed only one goal all season. Twente struck early and matched PSV's firepower throughout.
Sparta Rotterdam's collapse against Heerenveen was another blind spot. The model gave Sparta credit for ending their winless run in the previous fixture and counted on Heerenveen's ongoing streak of draws to persist. Instead, Heerenveen capitalised on Sparta's defensive vulnerabilities to score four without answer, completely overturning our projection of a home victory.
What the round changed
PSV's first dropped points of the campaign allowed AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord to close ground at the top of the table. At the opposite end, ADO Den Haag and Willem II remain rooted to the bottom two positions, still searching for their first league victories of the season.
