Eredivisie Matchweek 8 delivered several unexpected turns at the top of the table, highlighted by Feyenoord taking a 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar while Ajax were held to a 1-1 draw by NEC Nijmegen. It was a testing weekend for our forecasting model, which found success on safety-first calls but struggled badly on match results and totals, seeing several high-confidence projections fall short.
How our forecasts did
The exact scoreline calls suffered the worst weekend, finishing with zero correct from nine graded matches. Match result projections also struggled, with four of the nine calls landing as heavy favourites slipped up. The total goals category proved equally stubborn, recording four correct outcomes from nine.
On the other hand, the win or draw calls were our most reliable category, returning seven correct from nine graded fixtures. The both teams to score calls held up well with six correct from nine, matching the first team to score category where six of the nine calls landed. Half-time and full-time calls finished with three correct from nine.
Results
Friday 9 October
PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Heerenveen: PSV handled business on Friday evening to open the round. Our firm forecast of a PSV Eindhoven win landed comfortably, as did the call for PSV to score first, though the match stayed under the projected high goal total and Heerenveen failed to contribute to the scoresheet.
Saturday 10 October
Go Ahead Eagles 3-3 Sparta Rotterdam: A wild six-goal contest ended all square. The model missed on a Go Ahead Eagles win, but our calls for more than 2.5 goals and for both teams to score landed easily as Sparta stayed competitive despite missing Shunsuke Mito.
Feyenoord 2-0 AZ Alkmaar: In a meeting between two of the top sides, Feyenoord earned a clean-sheet victory. Our call for a Feyenoord win landed alongside the call for the hosts to open the scoring, though the total stopped just short of our projected over 2.5 goals.
Fortuna Sittard 1-1 Twente: Twente's three-match winning run came to an unexpected halt in Sittard. Our high-confidence forecast for an away win missed completely, though our projection that both teams would score was accurate.
Ajax 1-1 NEC Nijmegen: Ajax dominated possession and created chances but could not put away an out-of-form NEC side. The firm call for an Ajax win fell flat, though our projection that Ajax would score first was on target.
Sunday 11 October
Utrecht 3-1 Willem II: Utrecht delivered a comprehensive performance against bottom-placed Willem II. The high-confidence call for an Utrecht win landed alongside successful calls for more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
Telstar 2-2 ADO Den Haag: Two struggling clubs shared four goals in a lively contest. While the model missed on a Telstar victory, the calls for both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals came through cleanly.
PEC Zwolle 0-1 Cambuur: Cambuur took all three points in a quiet encounter. Our projection for a PEC Zwolle win missed, and the expected flurry of goals never materialised as Zwolle failed to score for a third straight match.
Excelsior 1-5 Groningen: Groningen ran riot away from home on Sunday afternoon. Even without top scorer Noah Naujoks, Excelsior found the net, helping land our forecasts for an away victory, over 2.5 goals, and both teams to score.
What we got wrong
The round's biggest miscalculations came in the two Saturday draws involving traditional heavyweights. The model placed high confidence on an Ajax win against NEC Nijmegen, trusting Ajax's superior shot volume and NEC's run of four games without a win. Ajax broke through first as anticipated, but NEC's leaky defensive unit held firm after equalising, denying Ajax the expected three points.
A similar error occurred in Fortuna Sittard against Twente. Twente entered the weekend on a six-match unbeaten streak and possessed the underlying numbers to dominate the contest against a Fortuna side conceding high numbers of shots. However, Fortuna converted their rare openings to secure a 1-1 draw, directly overturning another high-confidence match result forecast.
Summary
Matchweek 8 shifted the dynamic at the summit of Dutch football. Feyenoord's direct victory over AZ Alkmaar coupled with Ajax's stumble opened up breathing room near the top, while Groningen's dominant display at Excelsior reshuffled the mid-table pack.
