Matchweek 6 of the Jupiler Pro League saw Union St. Gilloise deliver a commanding five-goal victory over Lommel United, while away sides made their mark across the weekend. It was a testing round for our forecasting model, which struggled to predict outright winners despite correctly reading the goalscoring rhythms of several fixtures.
How our forecasts did
The model had a difficult time pinpointing exact outcomes, failing to land any of the nine exact scoreline projections. Match result calls also proved challenging, with just three of the nine forecasts proving correct, and the half-time and full-time topic only managed two hits. The model found better footing elsewhere: six of the nine win or draw forecasts landed, as did six of the nine total goals calls. We also correctly predicted five of the nine both teams to score outcomes and four of the nine first team to score projections.
Friday
KV Mechelen 0-1 Anderlecht Anderlecht finally found their away form, securing a narrow victory and a clean sheet on the road. The model had cautiously backed a KV Mechelen win, which missed, but correctly projected fewer than 2.5 goals and that at least one side would be kept off the scoresheet.
Saturday
SK Beveren 2-0 St. Truiden SK Beveren maintained their formidable home record with another shutout win, defying the model's cautious call for a St. Truiden victory. We did correctly forecast a winner either way, but missed on projections for a high-scoring match with goals at both ends.
KVC Westerlo 4-2 Standard Liege Westerlo halted a three-match losing streak by outscoring an in-form Standard Liege in a six-goal thriller at Het Kuipje. The model missed the match result by backing the visitors, but correctly foresaw a winner either way, more than 2.5 goals, and both teams getting on the scoresheet.
OH Leuven 1-1 Cercle Brugge Struggling OH Leuven finally put a point on the board after five straight defeats, holding Cercle Brugge to a draw. The model incorrectly projected an away win and missed on the total goals, but a cautious call for both teams to score proved accurate.
Union St. Gilloise 5-0 Lommel United Union St. Gilloise underlined their early-season dominance with a ruthless demolition of Lommel United. Our model was firmly behind the hosts, correctly calling the match result, the win or draw, the first team to score, and that the hosts would lead at the break and win the match. The projection for more than 2.5 goals was also correct.
Sunday
Club Brugge KV 3-1 Antwerp Club Brugge continued their impeccable home form, sweeping aside an Antwerp team that has been leaking goals. The model confidently backed a home win, correctly forecasting the match result, the win or draw, the first team to score, and more than 2.5 total goals.
Genk 1-1 Gent Genk's perfect home record came to an end in a tight draw against a resolute Gent side at the Cegeka Arena. We had cautiously projected a Genk win, which missed, but accurately called the win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, and both teams to score.
Zulte Waregem 0-1 Charleroi Charleroi extended their winning run to five consecutive matches, snatching an away victory and breaching Zulte Waregem's previously impenetrable home defence at the Elindus Arena. The model incorrectly called a home win, but accurately projected fewer than 2.5 goals and correctly backed Charleroi to score the opening goal.
RAAL La Louvière 3-0 Kortrijk RAAL La Louvière secured their first victory of the season with a commanding performance at the bottom of the table. A cautious projection for a home win was correct, as were calls for the win or draw, the hosts to score first, and RAAL La Louvière to lead at half-time before winning the match.
What we got wrong
The outright match results proved to be the model's primary stumbling block this weekend. The reasoning heavily weighed recent home fortresses against visiting form, but often leaned the wrong way when those records clashed. At the Elindus Arena, the model trusted Zulte Waregem's streak of four straight home wins and prolific scoring record over Charleroi's perfect defensive run on the road, resulting in a missed call for a home win.
Similarly, the model underestimated SK Beveren's defensive resilience. Despite acknowledging their two previous home clean sheets, the projection favoured St. Truiden based on their average of over three goals per away trip. Instead, Beveren dictated the terms, nullifying the visitors and turning our match result, total goals, and both teams to score forecasts into misses.
Matchweek 6 reinforced that early-season form can be fragile, especially when robust home defences meet high-flying away attacks. Union St. Gilloise and Club Brugge emerged as the weekend's biggest statements, solidifying their credentials while the bottom of the table saw crucial movement as struggling sides finally found a foothold.
