Matchweek 7 of the Jupiler Pro League concluded with Club Brugge KV delivering a convincing 3-0 victory over Genk, while leaders Union St. Gilloise maintained their dominant start with a two-goal victory at Antwerp. Across the nine fixtures, our projection model found steady footing on outright outcomes by landing six of nine match result calls, but it endured a difficult weekend reading goal totals across the division.
How our forecasts did
Total goals projections struggled badly this round, with only two of nine calls landing. Our model projected open, high-scoring affairs in matches that ended up deadlocked or dominated by clean sheets, while also missing on exact scoreline projections, where none of the nine calls were correct. Both teams to score landed four of nine calls, while half-time and full-time projections found success in three of nine attempts.
By contrast, the model read directional outcomes with far greater clarity. Win or draw proved the strongest topic of the weekend, with seven of nine calls proving correct. Match result projections delivered six correct outcomes from nine fixtures, and first team to score matched that return with six of nine successful projections.
Results
Gent opened the round on Friday with a 2-1 win over Standard Liege. The model correctly anticipated a Gent victory, Gent to win or draw, and the hosts scoring first, though low-confidence projections on a low-scoring shutout fell short.
On Saturday afternoon, OH Leuven secured their first win of the campaign by defeating RAAL La Louvière 2-0. The model anticipated the home win, OH Leuven to win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, at least one side failing to score, OH Leuven opening the scoring, and the hosts leading at both half-time and full-time.
Charleroi held off Cercle Brugge in a 3-2 win later that afternoon. Our projections landed on a Charleroi victory, Charleroi to win or draw, both teams finding the net, the hosts opening the scoring, and Charleroi leading at both the break and full-time, though a low-confidence call for under 2.5 goals missed as the scoring accelerated.
Anderlecht followed with a 3-0 win against Zulte Waregem on Saturday evening. Projections successfully called the Anderlecht win, the home side to win or draw, at least one team kept off the scoresheet, and Anderlecht scoring first, while a cautious projection of under 2.5 goals was undone by a third home goal.
Lommel United and KV Mechelen played out a 0-0 draw in Saturday's concurrent fixture. The model had projected a Lommel United win and an open match, getting only the call for at least one side to be kept off the scoresheet right.
Sunday began with Union St. Gilloise earning a 2-0 victory away to Antwerp. The model's firm calls for an away win and for Union St. Gilloise to open the scoring proved correct, alongside the win or draw projection, though expectations of both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals did not materialise.
KVC Westerlo produced a surprise 2-0 win away at St. Truiden on Sunday afternoon. The model missed across the board on this fixture, incorrectly anticipating a St. Truiden victory, a home clean sheet, and over 2.5 goals.
Club Brugge KV followed with an authoritative 3-0 home win over Genk. The model had high confidence in both a Club Brugge KV win and over 2.5 goals, landing both alongside projections for the home side to score first and lead at both half-time and full-time.
In the final match of the round, Kortrijk earned a 1-0 victory over SK Beveren. The model projected an away victory following Kortrijk's six-match losing run, though it did land a cautious win-or-draw call that anticipated a decisive outcome rather than a draw.
What we got wrong
The clearest blind spots appeared in the projections for St. Truiden against KVC Westerlo and Kortrijk against SK Beveren. At St. Truiden, the model leaned heavily on the hosts' record of losing only once in five games and keeping three clean sheets, while Westerlo had shipped seven goals across three away trips. Instead, Westerlo nullified the home attack completely and took control of the game.
At Kortrijk, our model relied on the hosts' desperate sequence of six consecutive defeats and a return of just one goal all season. SK Beveren arrived with three league wins on the board, but they failed to break down a side that had leaked goals for weeks, giving Kortrijk an unexpected first victory of the season and leaving our match result call well off the mark.
Matchweek 7 tightened the picture near the basement as OH Leuven and Kortrijk both ended losing runs, while Union St. Gilloise and Club Brugge KV consolidated their positions near the summit with shutouts.
