Allsvenskan Matchweek 14 delivered one emphatic statement from league leaders Sirius and a host of results that tested the model’s match-result logic. Between 24 and 27 July, all eight fixtures played out, and while the ‘win or draw’ forecasts proved flawless, calling the outright winner proved far trickier – only three of the eight match-result calls landed.
How our forecasts did
The standout performer was the ‘win or draw’ market, where all eight graded forecasts came in correctly. At the other end of the scale, the outright match result struggled, with just three of eight correct. Total goals split evenly at four from eight, while both teams to score fared slightly better with five. The rarest feat of the round came in the exact scoreline category: only one of the eight calls hit, but that solitary success – Västerås SK 2-0 Örgryte IS – was a full house that also nailed the half-time/full-time prediction and every other attached forecast.
Results
Västerås SK FK 2-0 Örgryte IS – The round’s perfect forecast. A reshuffled Västerås side, missing three starters, were backed to win and keep a clean sheet against an Örgryte team that had lost four straight away games without scoring. The hosts delivered exactly that, racing into a lead they never relinquished and holding the visitors goalless. The model’s low-confidence exact scoreline call was spot on, and the accompanying ‘under 2.5 goals’ and ‘at least one side kept off the scoresheet’ forecasts also landed.
Degerfors IF 0-1 Djurgårdens IF – The model got the winner right but underestimated the game’s lack of goals. Djurgården’s narrow victory meant the medium-confidence ‘over 2.5 goals’ and ‘both teams to score’ forecasts failed, while the ‘win or draw’ high-confidence safety net held firm.
Kalmar FF 2-1 Mjällby AIF – A fixture the model saw as a tight draw ended with a home win. Kalmar’s victory validated the ‘win or draw’ call at high confidence, but the low-confidence ‘under 2.5 goals’ forecast was undone by a three-goal contest. The ‘both teams to score’ call landed, yet the 1-1 exact scoreline prediction was wide of the mark.
IF Brommapojkarna 1-1 Hammarby FF – Hammarby were favoured to win, but a decimated Brommapojkarna side – missing top scorer M. Hansen and two defensive regulars through suspension – held on for a draw. The model correctly called Hammarby to score first and both teams to score, but the medium-confidence over 2.5 goals and outright away win forecasts were wrong. The low-confidence half-time/full-time punt on level at the break and Hammarby winning it fell at the final hurdle.
Sirius 4-1 IFK Göteborg – A high-confidence home win sailed through as Sirius extended their perfect home record with a five-match winning streak. Both teams scored as expected, the over 2.5 goals call was never in doubt, and only the exact scoreline (3-1) missed by a single Sirius strike. The leaders remain firmly on top.
GAIS 1-1 Halmstad – The round’s biggest upset for the model. GAIS had conceded just twice in seven home games and were high-confidence calls to win and keep a clean sheet against a bottom-placed Halmstad side that had lost five of six away trips. Instead, Halmstad grabbed a goal and a point, wrecking the match-result and both-teams-to-score calls. The ‘under 2.5 goals’ forecast was the only consolation.
Malmö FF 1-2 IF Elfsborg – Four missing starters proved costly for Malmö as Elfsborg ended a five-match winless run with a surprise victory. The model’s high-confidence call for a decisive result (no draw) was correct, and both ‘over 2.5 goals’ and ‘both teams to score’ landed, but the medium-confidence Malmö win and the 2-1 exact scoreline prediction were both wrong.
BK Häcken 0-0 AIK Stockholm – A goalless stalemate that defied every attacking expectation. The model was highly confident of over 2.5 goals and both teams scoring, yet neither materialised. Häcken’s ‘win or draw’ safety net held, but the match-result, total goals and both-teams-to-score forecasts all missed in the round’s quietest contest.
What we got wrong
The high-confidence GAIS win was the most jarring miss. The data had painted a picture of a home fortress against a side shipping over two goals per away trip, but Halmstad scrapped their way to a draw that exposed how fragile even the strongest statistical case can be on a single afternoon. Similarly, Malmö’s attacking output and Elfsborg’s late-game fragility suggested a comfortable home win, yet the four absent starters peeled away enough structure for Elfsborg to snatch the points.
Elsewhere, the model read too much into attacking averages. Häcken’s prolific home scoring and leaky defence screamed goals, but the 0-0 draw was a reminder that a sample of six home games does not guarantee another goal-fest. Degerfors–Djurgården was painted as a duel between a porous backline and a potent attack, yet it produced a solitary away goal.
What the round changed
Sirius’s 4-1 demolition cements their grip on first place, while Hammarby’s draw at Brommapojkarna leaves them with work to do to apply any real pressure. At the bottom, Halmstad’s point at GAIS provides a flicker of hope, though the gap to safety remains considerable. The model’s win-or-draw perfection across eight fixtures means the safety-first logic held firm; the struggle to separate winners from draws will be the focal point for improvement when Matchweek 15 arrives.
