Matchweek 6 in the Segunda División delivered an unusually high-scoring set of matches across Spain, headlined by Castellón dismantling Tenerife 5-0 to reinforce their standing near the top of the table. Away victories also proved the dominant theme of the round, with Cordoba, Mallorca, Eibar, Girona, and Burgos all taking points on the road. For our analytical model, the weekend brought strong returns in straight match calling alongside notable miscalculations regarding defensive totals.
How our forecasts did
The total goals category proved to be our weakest area across the round. Only three of the ten total goals calls landed as multiple matches intended to stay tight turned into open, end-to-end affairs. Both teams to score also suffered from the unexpected volume of goals, with four of the ten calls proving correct.
By contrast, the model proved sharp when assessing who would strike first and who would avoid defeat. Eight of the ten win or draw calls were accurate, while eight of the ten first team to score projections landed cleanly. Seven of the ten match result calls were correct, providing a solid core to the weekend. In half-time and full-time outcomes, five of the ten calls were accurate, while one of the ten exact scoreline calls hit the target when Real Sociedad II fell 0-1 to Mallorca.
Results
Albacete 1-2 Cordoba
Cordoba earned their first away win after previously scoring twice in every away trip, edging Albacete 1-2. The model correctly anticipated more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score, though it missed the match result by leaning toward a home victory.
Real Sociedad II 0-1 Mallorca
Mallorca ground out a 0-1 win at Real Sociedad II, maintaining the home side's run without a home victory. The model had a clean sweep on the margins here, correctly projecting a Mallorca win, fewer than 2.5 goals, at least one side kept off the scoresheet, and the exact 0-1 scoreline.
FC Andorra 1-3 Sporting Gijon
Sporting Gijon produced an efficient away showing to win 1-3 against FC Andorra. This fixture did not carry any pre-match projections from our model.
Castellón 5-0 Tenerife
Castellón preserved their record of not conceding at home by crushing Tenerife 5-0. Our model rightly called a Castellón win, Castellón opening the scoring, and a clean sheet, but was thoroughly undone by the five-goal margin after anticipating fewer than 2.5 goals.
Eldense 1-2 Eibar
Eibar continued their form away from home with a 1-2 victory at Eldense. The model correctly anticipated an Eibar win and Eibar opening the scoring, but missed on a low-scoring match as Eldense breached Eibar's away defence.
Cadiz 1-2 Girona
Cadiz remained without a home win after Girona took a 1-2 victory, helped by an attack featuring Y. Asprilla that scored in each of their trips. Our projection for a Girona win and Girona opening the scoring landed, though the forecast of under 2.5 goals fell short.
Sabadell 3-1 Oviedo
Sabadell preserved their flawless home record with a 3-1 win over Oviedo, striking early to break down an Oviedo side that had yet to concede away from home. The model correctly picked the Sabadell win and the first goal, but the four-goal tally defeated our projection for a tight scoreline.
AD Ceuta FC 1-1 Valladolid
AD Ceuta FC secured their first home point of the season in an evenly contested 1-1 draw with Valladolid. The model hit on both teams to score, fewer than 2.5 goals, and Valladolid finding the net first, but missed the match result after projecting an away victory.
Almeria 2-0 Celta de Vigo II
Almeria made it three home wins from three with a 2-0 victory over Celta de Vigo II. Our firm forecast for an Almeria win, Almeria leading at the interval, and Almeria opening the scoring all landed, though Celta de Vigo II failing to score prevented the total goals call from completing the set.
Las Palmas 1-2 Burgos
Burgos maintained their unbeaten run by edging Las Palmas 1-2 away from home. While the model correctly called Las Palmas to score first, it missed the match outcome after backing a home win based on Burgos's defensive approach on the road.
Leganes 3-2 Granada CF
Leganes prevailed in a five-goal battle, taking a 3-2 win over Granada CF. The model correctly selected a Leganes win and Leganes scoring first, but failed to anticipate the defensive openness that saw five goals scored.
What we got wrong
The primary flaw in our projections was expecting early-season defensive records to hold firm. Both Castellón and Sabadell had shown solid defensive traits in their opening matches, while opponents like Oviedo and Tenerife had either posted clean sheets on the road or relied on singular attacking points like Enric Gallego. Expecting fewer than 2.5 goals in those fixtures backfired as both matches saw open, high-scoring attacking play.
The defeat for Las Palmas against Burgos also caught the model out. Las Palmas entered on the back of consecutive wins, and Burgos had arrived relying heavily on low-scoring defensive matches away from home. While Las Palmas struck first, Burgos managed to score twice to upend our projections for a low-scoring home win.
Matchweek 6 proved that defensive records established in August and early September remain fragile in the Segunda División, with away sides showing far more enterprise than the early statistics suggested.
