Segunda División Matchweek 7 delivered major upsets and defensive battles, headlined by bottom-dwelling FC Andorra stunning Granada CF 3-2 on their own ground. Our forecasting model had a balanced round overall, seeing eight of eleven win or draw calls land and picking six correct match results from eleven fixtures, though unexpected scorelines in Andalusia disrupted the total goals calls.
How our forecasts did
The win or draw calls performed best this round, with eight of the eleven projections landing correctly. Both teams to score calls and first team to score calls also held up well, each delivering seven correct outcomes from eleven matches. Six of the eleven match result calls and six of the eleven total goals projections landed.
The most difficult topics were half-time and full-time forecasts, where five of eleven calls proved accurate, and exact scorelines, which saw one correct call from eleven attempts when Burgos ground out a 1-0 victory over Eldense.
Results
Girona 2-0 Albacete Girona controlled the contest from the start to take all three points against bottom-of-the-table Albacete. Our firm call for a Girona win and our forecast that they would lead at the break and win the match landed cleanly, though Albacete failed to score, meaning our call for both teams to score missed.
AD Ceuta FC 3-1 Real Sociedad II Ceuta entered the match with only one point from six games but surprised Real Sociedad II with a decisive display. The projection of a Real Sociedad II victory missed, but our calls for more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Real Sociedad II to score the opening goal all landed.
Granada CF 2-3 FC Andorra Andorra had lost five straight matches coming in, yet their ability to create chances finally converted into goals as they beat Granada in a five-goal thriller. The model projected a low-scoring home win, missing on the match result and the total goals call, though both teams to score landed.
Celta de Vigo II 1-1 Sabadell A competitive encounter saw the points shared between Celta de Vigo II and Sabadell. Our cautious projection for Sabadell to win missed, but the calls for fewer than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and level at the break and the points shared all proved correct.
Tenerife 1-1 Cadiz** Cadiz arrived winless in six outings and fell behind early, matching our call for Tenerife to score the opening goal. Cadiz fought back to earn a point, which meant our call for a home win missed, though our win or draw call and our call for fewer than 2.5 goals landed.
Valladolid 3-1 Cordoba Valladolid found their touch in attack to defeat Cordoba comfortably. The model accurately called a Valladolid win, more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and Valladolid to score the opening goal.
Mallorca 0-1 Almeria In an encounter between two sides near the top of the table, Almeria snatched a narrow away win. Mallorca had entered on a run of three home wins without conceding, leading the model to project a home win; instead, Almeria took the points with a single goal.
Burgos 1-0 Eldense Burgos maintained their unbeaten home record by edging past Eldense. This was the model's sharpest fixture of the round: all seven calls landed, including the exact scoreline of 1-0, Burgos to score first, fewer than 2.5 goals, and Burgos to lead at half-time and win.
Eibar 3-2 Las Palmas Eibar secured another victory in an end-to-end clash against Las Palmas. The model correctly anticipated an Eibar win, Eibar to score the opening goal, both teams to score, and Eibar to lead at half-time and win, though the five-goal total overshot the call for fewer than 2.5 goals.
Oviedo 2-0 Sporting Gijon Oviedo claimed local bragging rights by shutting out Sporting Gijon. Our calls for an Oviedo win, Oviedo to win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, and at least one side to keep a clean sheet all proved accurate.
Leganes 0-2 Castellón Division leaders Castellón extended their strong away run with a shut-out victory over Leganes. The model projected a Castellón win, a winner either way, Castellón to score first, and the visitors to lead at the interval and win the match.
What we got wrong
The most significant miss of the round came at Granada, where FC Andorra had entered with five consecutive defeats and sat bottom of the table. The model relied on head-to-head history that pointed toward a low-scoring affair with two goals or fewer, while heavily weighting Granada's back-to-back victories. Although Andorra's underlying ability to retain possession and create chances was noted in the pre-match reading, their finishing had been non-existent all season; when they scored three times, it overturned our calls for a home victory and under 2.5 goals.
The model also misjudged Mallorca's meeting with Almeria. Mallorca had not conceded a single goal on their own pitch all campaign, while Almeria had scored only twice across three away trips. The expectation of a Mallorca victory and goals at both ends fell flat as Almeria held firm for a 1-0 away win.
Matchweek 7 underlined that possession and chance quality can suddenly turn into goals even for teams struggling at the foot of the table, shaking up the standings across both ends of the division.
