Belgium's Jupiler Pro League delivered a dramatic Matchweek 8, headlined by KVC Westerlo dismantling Antwerp 5-1 and league leaders Union St. Gilloise dropping points in a 1-1 draw with OH Leuven. Across the nine fixtures, our forecasting model enjoyed a steady weekend on overall outcomes, securing six correct match result calls and eight of nine on win or draw, though it struggled to pin down first-half patterns and opening goalscorers.
How our forecasts did
The split across topics showed clear strengths and weaknesses. The exact scoreline calls were the hardest to land, with one of the nine calls correct—specifically predicting Anderlecht's 2-1 victory at Cercle Brugge. The half-time and full-time calls also went poorly, returning three correct from nine graded calls, while the first team to score projections managed four correct out of nine.
Elsewhere, the structural match projections performed much better. The win or draw calls were our most reliable category, finding the right side in eight of the nine matches. The total goals category also fared well, with seven of the nine calls coming in as projected. In the match result topic, six of the nine calls landed, while both teams to score finished with six correct out of nine.
Results
SK Beveren 1-3 Lommel United
Beveren had won all three home matches without conceding prior to kickoff, but that run ended against a Lommel side that found their scoring touch on the road. The model missed on the home win, but both the call for more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score landed comfortably.
Cercle Brugge 1-2 Anderlecht
Anderlecht maintained their place near the sharp end of the table by handing Cercle Brugge an eighth straight game without a win. The model hit its projection of an Anderlecht victory, saw the call for more than 2.5 goals arrive, and even hit the exact scoreline call of Cercle Brugge 1-2 Anderlecht.
RAAL La Louvière 1-4 Club Brugge KV
Club Brugge justified their firm backing by scoring four times against a struggling RAAL side. The model's high-confidence forecast for a Club Brugge win landed without incident, along with the calls for more than 2.5 goals and both teams to score.
Genk 3-0 Kortrijk
Genk extended their unbeaten home run by comfortably sweeping aside Kortrijk, who have now lost four consecutive league matches. The model projected a home win and more than 2.5 goals, both of which came through, though Kortrijk failed to provide the goal needed for both teams to score.
Zulte Waregem 0-2 Gent
Gent kept up their strong defensive sequence, conceding only four league goals all season as they took three points away from home. Our low-confidence forecast for a Gent win was vindicated, as was the call for fewer than 2.5 goals.
Standard Liege 0-1 Charleroi
Charleroi maintained their record of winning every away match this season with a disciplined defensive display. The model correctly selected Charleroi to win and to score first, though it missed on the call for over 2.5 goals when the hosts were kept off the scoresheet.
Union St. Gilloise 1-1 OH Leuven
The surprise result of the round occurred as Union St. Gilloise, who had won five in a row, were held by an OH Leuven side that had struggled away from home. The model's firm projection of a home win missed, though the win or draw call held firm.
KVC Westerlo 5-1 Antwerp
Antwerp were cut apart for their fifth straight defeat as Westerlo ran riot. The model anticipated a home victory and more than 2.5 goals, but the scale of Westerlo's five-goal outburst exceeded the low-scoring forecast.
KV Mechelen 4-3 St. Truiden
A seven-goal contest closed out the weekend as winless Mechelen finally broke their drought against St. Truiden. The model leaned toward the away side in a cautious call that missed, though it hit on both teams to score and over 2.5 goals.
What we got wrong
The model's most notable failure came at the top of the table with Union St. Gilloise. Entering the weekend with five straight victories and 16 goals scored across that run, the model gave high confidence to a home win and more than 2.5 goals. OH Leuven had managed just five goals all season and carried poor away defensive numbers, yet they restricted the hosts to a single strike and snatched an unexpected point.
The other major blind spot was SK Beveren. Having kept three clean sheets out of three at home, Beveren were tipped with medium confidence to overcome a Lommel United team that had struggled for goals. Instead, Lommel struck three times away from home, dismantling the model's match result and scoreline expectations.
Matchweek 8 tightened the pack near the top of the division following Union St. Gilloise's dropped points, while Antwerp's slump deepened dramatically and KV Mechelen finally collected their first league win of the campaign.
