Matchweek 6 of the Süper Lig delivered high drama across Turkey, headlined by Trabzonspor handing league leaders Galatasaray a stunning 4-0 defeat. Across the round's nine fixtures, our forecasting model produced a mixed showing, excelling on total goals and win or draw projections while finding straight match result calls difficult to pin down amid several unexpected results.
How our forecasts did
Exact scoreline calls endured the hardest weekend, with none of the nine projections landing. Straight match result calls also struggled, as only four of the nine calls were correct after surprises involving Galatasaray and Beşiktaş upset the anticipated pattern. Half-time and full-time forecasts similarly fell short, returning two correct calls from nine.
By contrast, the model read the broader match dynamics very well. Total goals led the way alongside win or draw projections, each landing seven correct calls from nine graded. Both teams to score calls finished slightly in positive territory with five correct out of nine, identical to the first team to score category, which also saw five of the nine calls land.
Results
Friday 18 September
Kasımpaşa 0-0 Konyaspor
The round opened with a scoreless affair that ran counter to our expectations. The model anticipated a home victory and more than 2.5 goals, but Kasımpaşa recorded another home draw while the win or draw call landed.
Saturday 19 September
Çorum FK 1-2 Alanyaspor
Alanyaspor came away with the points in a tight contest. While the model projected a home victory, it correctly forecast both teams to score and called a decisive outcome under win or draw.
Kocaelispor 2-0 Gaziantep FK
Kocaelispor maintained their defensive record at home with another clean-sheet victory. Our model delivered a strong reading here, correctly calling the home win, win or draw, fewer than 2.5 goals, the clean sheet for at least one side, and Kocaelispor to score the opening goal.
Başakşehir 4-0 Gençlerbirliği S.K.
Başakşehir took complete control on home soil with an emphatic four-goal performance. The model landed the home win, win or draw, over 2.5 goals, the opening goal, and the half-time lead leading into full-time victory.
Trabzonspor 4-0 Galatasaray
In the standout fixture of Saturday, Trabzonspor dismantled the league leaders. Our model cautiously projected a Trabzonspor win at low confidence due to the absence of Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen, landing that call along with win or draw, more than 2.5 goals, and the hosts scoring first.
Sunday 20 September
Erzurumspor FK 1-0 Samsunspor
Erzurumspor ground out an unexpected single-goal victory. While the model favoured Samsunspor for the match result, it successfully projected fewer than 2.5 goals and a decisive outcome under win or draw.
Fenerbahçe 8-0 Eyüpspor
Fenerbahçe produced the most lopsided scoreline of the campaign, overwhelming Eyüpspor. The model carried high confidence across the match result, win or draw, total goals, and first team to score, with all four landing comfortably alongside the half-time lead leading to victory.
Amed 3-2 Beşiktaş
Amed extended their sparkling home form by edging second-placed Beşiktaş in a five-goal thriller. Our model favoured an away win, but it accurately anticipated plenty of action, landing both the over 2.5 goals call and both teams to score.
Göztepe 2-2 Rizespor
A back-and-forth contest ended honours even. The model missed on a home victory, but it successfully called both teams to score, more than 2.5 goals, and Göztepe finding the net first.
What we got wrong
The round's two biggest misses came in fixtures where established heavyweights stumbled on the road. At Amed, the model favoured Beşiktaş to win based on league positioning, expecting the visitors to halt the hosts' early scoring run. Instead, Amed's home attack continued its prolific form by putting three past the second-placed side, undoing both our match result and win or draw projections.
In Erzurum, the model leaned toward a Samsunspor away win, trusting the visitors' defensive record against an Erzurumspor attack that had managed only two goals in their previous five league matches. Samsunspor failed to break through, and Erzurumspor made their single goal count to snatch all three points.
Matchweek 6 shook up the upper tier of the table, as Galatasaray's heavy defeat in Trabzon and Beşiktaş's slip against Amed opened the door for Fenerbahçe, whose eight-goal performance served as a loud statement to the rest of the league.
