The ninth round of the Eerste Divisie delivered an avalanche of goals and a raft of shared points, headlined by Jong Utrecht dismantling Jong Ajax 6-1 and league leaders Heracles dropping points in a 2-2 draw at Helmond Sport. Across the round, the model struggled with outright match winners due to five draws across ten fixtures, though its reads on attacking output held firm.
How our forecasts did
The match result calls suffered badly from the stalemate-heavy slate, with only three of the ten calls landing. Exact scoreline projections failed entirely, missing on all ten fixtures, while half-time and full-time forecasts produced just one correct call out of ten. First team to score calls also finished below parity, landing in four of ten matches.
In contrast, both teams to score proved the round's standout success, coming in on eight of the ten fixtures as defensive frailties across the league were exposed. Total goals calls finished balanced, with five of the ten calls proving accurate, while win or draw forecasts also broke even with five correct outcomes from ten.
Results
Jong PSV U21 1-1 Jong AZ
The model projected an away victory with more than 2.5 goals, but the youth sides cancelled each other out in a tight 1-1 draw, though the call for both teams to score landed comfortably.
Jong Utrecht 6-1 Jong Ajax
Jong Utrecht produced the shock of the round by putting six past Jong Ajax. While the model anticipated a narrow away win, it correctly called more than 2.5 goals, both teams to score, and a winner either way.
Helmond Sport 2-2 Heracles
League-leading Heracles were projected to take all three points with the opening goal, but Helmond Sport fought back to earn a 2-2 draw. Calls for both teams to score, more than 2.5 goals, the opening goal, and Heracles to win or draw all landed.
Vitesse 2-2 NAC Breda
A four-goal stalemate meant the model's call for an away win fell flat, but projections for both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals were rewarded as neither side found defensive control.
TOP Oss 4-1 MVV
Despite sitting bottom of the table, TOP Oss repeated their past home dominance over MVV with an emphatic 4-1 victory. The model accurately backed a home win, a winner either way, both teams to score, and over 2.5 goals.
Almere City FC 1-0 FC Volendam
Almere City FC edged a low-scoring contest courtesy of a single first-half strike. The model correctly selected the home win, a winner either way, the first goalscorer side, and Almere City FC ahead at the break and winning it.
Den Bosch 1-1 Dordrecht
Den Bosch could not capitalise on home advantage against a porous away side, settling for a 1-1 draw. The model missed on the home win and goal line, though both teams to score came through.
FC Eindhoven 2-2 De Graafschap
An entertaining four-goal contest saw the points shared between two attack-minded sides. The model missed the match winner call on De Graafschap, but both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals hit the mark.
Waalwijk 1-1 Emmen
Waalwijk took the opening goal as projected, yet they were pegged back by Emmen to finish 1-1. The draw ruined the home win projection, though both teams to score landed once again.
VVV Venlo 2-0 Roda
VVV Venlo continued their strong run on home turf by seeing off Roda with two unanswered goals. The model correctly anticipated a home win, a winner either way, and VVV Venlo scoring the opening goal.
What we got wrong
The biggest failure of the round came in forecasting outright winners across matches that finished level. Five of the ten fixtures ended in draws, a pattern that derailed the model's low match result tally. In games involving Vitesse, Den Bosch, FC Eindhoven, and Waalwijk, the projections leaned into clear winners based on previous attacking records, yet each match descended into parity.
The heavy misjudgment of Jong Utrecht versus Jong Ajax also stood out. The model anticipated Jong Ajax's away scoring run to push them toward a narrow win, judging Jong Utrecht's leaky home form as a severe liability. Instead, Jong Utrecht overwhelmed the visitors from the outset, turning a supposed open battle into a five-goal runaway.
Matchweek 9 underlined how unstable early defensive records remain in the division, with table toppers Heracles held and the bottom half continuing to take points off the promotion chasers.
