Matchweek 29 of the Brazilian Serie A delivered an action-packed round of fixtures, headlined by Vasco da Gama's 2-1 away victory over Botafogo and an emphatic four-goal display from Fluminense. Across the ten fixtures, our forecasting model produced solid returns by correctly calling six match results and nine of the ten opening goalscorers.
How our forecasts did
Total goals proved the most difficult category of the round, with only five of the ten calls landing as several fixtures developed into open encounters that broke through defensive patterns. The exact scoreline calls were predictably tough to hit, though one of the ten projections landed when the model correctly foresaw Vasco da Gama winning 2-1 against Botafogo. The model found its best returns in the first team to score category and the win or draw calls, where nine of the ten projections were accurate in each. Elsewhere across the card, six of the ten match result calls landed, while both teams to score finished with six correct calls from ten and the half-time and full-time calls also returned six correct calls from ten.
Results
RB Bragantino 1-1 Mirassol: RB Bragantino scored first and preserved the win or draw forecast, but our projection of a home victory failed as the visitors held on for a point.
Internacional 2-1 Corinthians: Internacional struck the opening goal and held their lead from the break through to the final whistle, landing the match result and half-time and full-time calls despite the match going past our projection of fewer than 2.5 goals.
Remo 1-1 Gremio: Our cautious projection of a home victory missed as the visitors claimed a point, though our call for both teams to score was confirmed.
Vitoria 4-0 Chapecoense: Vitoria dominated from the outset, landing our firm call on the opening goal alongside forecasts for a home victory, more than 2.5 goals, and a lead at both half-time and full-time.
Botafogo 1-2 Vasco da Gama: The model delivered its sharpest performance of the week in this fixture, accurately calling the 1-2 exact scoreline alongside successful forecasts for an away win, both teams to score, and more than 2.5 goals.
Cruzeiro 2-0 Sao Paulo: Cruzeiro struck first and defended solidly throughout, landing our calls on the home win, fewer than 2.5 goals, and the lead at both intervals.
Santos 2-2 Flamengo: Flamengo opened the scoring in an entertaining encounter that justified our calls for both teams to score and more than 2.5 goals, though the hosts fought back to deny the projected away victory.
Atletico Paranaense 2-2 Atlético Mineiro: The hosts struck first to land our opening goal call, but an open contest pushed the scoring beyond our call of fewer than 2.5 goals and wiped out the projected home win.
Fluminense 4-0 Coritiba: Fluminense justified our firmest forecast of the round, scoring first, leading throughout, keeping Coritiba off the board, and cruising past the 2.5 goals line in a commanding home display.
Palmeiras 1-0 Bahia: Palmeiras scored the opening goal and protected their lead through both halves to land our firm call on a home win, though Bahia restricted the scoreline to fall short of our projection of more than 2.5 goals.
What we got wrong
The model's sharpest miscalculations came in the total goals category, particularly in fixtures where defensive records were breached by unexpected attacking efficiency. In Porto Alegre, Internacional faced a Corinthians side arriving on a six-match losing run, and the model projected fewer than 2.5 goals in an encounter between two cautious sides lacking confidence. Instead, three goals were exchanged across ninety minutes. A similar issue emerged in Curitiba, where Atletico Paranaense hosted an Atlético Mineiro side that had failed to score in eight of their fourteen away trips this season. Relying on those away struggles, the model called for fewer than 2.5 goals, only for the visitors to strike twice in an open 2-2 draw.
Elsewhere, the model placed too much weight on Gremio's miserable away record of four points from fourteen matches when calling for a Remo victory. Remo entered the contest on a five-match losing run and winless in eight, and their inability to control matches caught up with them again as they failed to see out a lead.
Fluminense and Palmeiras strengthened their positions with clean sheets, while Corinthians and Chapecoense remain under heavy pressure following another weekend without a victory.
