Bundesliga Matchweek 5 produced drama across Germany as Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund both dropped points in 2-2 draws, while RB Leipzig dismantled Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0. Our forecasting model had a solid round overall, correctly projecting six of the nine match results and eight of the nine win or draw outcomes, though the stumbles from the league's frontrunners spoiled our high-confidence calls.
How our forecasts did
Exact scoreline and half-time and full-time calls proved hardest to hit this weekend, with only two of the nine landing in each category. Outside of those specific outcomes, the model read the round well. The win or draw projections performed best, landing eight of nine calls. The model also saw plenty of goals coming across the division: seven of the nine total goals forecasts were correct, while seven of the nine first team to score projections hit their mark. Match results finished with six of the nine correct, and both teams to score landed six of nine.
Results
Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Werder Bremen opened the round on Friday. Dortmund led early to land our first team to score call and secured the win or draw forecast, but our firm call on a home win failed when Bremen fought back for a point.
1899 Hoffenheim 2-3 Hamburger SV delivered an upset on Saturday afternoon. The model missed on a Hoffenheim victory and on Hoffenheim opening the scoring, though our projection of more than 2.5 goals and both teams scoring landed comfortably.
FC Augsburg 2-2 Bayern München was another shock. Bayern could not turn their territorial control into three points, which broke our high-confidence call on an away win, though the projection of more than 2.5 goals was right.
FSV Mainz 05 3-4 Bayer Leverkusen turned into a seven-goal thriller. The model correctly anticipated a Bayer Leverkusen win, over 2.5 goals, both teams scoring, and Leverkusen getting the first goal.
Union Berlin 1-0 SV Elversberg was settled by a single goal. Our low-confidence call on a Union Berlin win and our projection of Union scoring first landed, but the low scoreline missed our call for over 2.5 goals.
SC Paderborn 07 0-2 VfB Stuttgart saw the visitors take control from the start. Stuttgart struck first and led at both intervals, landing our match result, first team to score, and half-time and full-time forecasts.
RB Leipzig 6-0 Eintracht Frankfurt was a one-sided display. The model was right on a Leipzig win, Leipzig scoring first, and over 2.5 goals, though Frankfurt's complete failure in front of goal scuppered our both teams to score forecast.
- FC Köln 2-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach gave the model a clean sweep on Sunday, including the exact scoreline. Köln opened the scoring, won the match, and pushed the total past 2.5 goals as projected.
SC Freiburg 2-1 FC Schalke 04 concluded the weekend with another exact scoreline success. Freiburg opened the scoring and took all three points, delivering on our match result and total goals calls.
What we got wrong
The round's biggest missteps came at the top of the table. The model placed firm confidence in Borussia Dortmund and Bayern München winning their fixtures. Dortmund brought four consecutive victories and three clean sheets into their meeting with Werder Bremen, but Bremen's scoring run continued and breached a previously tight defence twice. In Augsburg, Bayern dominated possession and territory as expected, yet Augsburg converted modest shot volume into two goals to take a draw. Hoffenheim was our other major miss: despite Adam Daghim creating steady chances, their defensive generosity allowed Hamburg to leave with all three points.
With Bayern and Dortmund both held, the Bundesliga table tightens at the summit, while Leipzig's commanding victory and Leverkusen's resilience keep the pressure on the early leaders.
